DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Review: The Battery-Life Monster for Travel

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is the battery-life monster of action cameras, and after two weeks in Vietnam it became the action cam we recommend to most travelers. It outlasts the GoPro Hero 13 by hours, beats it in low light, and its subject tracking makes solo filming effortless. The only things it loses are GoPro's mount ecosystem and lens mods.

On a humid Hanoi evening, filming sizzling street food stalls in near-darkness, it produced clips we proudly used; the GoPro footage from the same stall needed apologies.

Design & Handling for Travel

The Action 5 Pro is compact, rugged and waterproof to 20 metres — no case needed for any snorkeling or waterfall swim we tried in Vietnam. The magnetic quick-release mount is faster than GoPro's system: the camera clicks on and off mounts with one hand, which matters when a kayak is drifting.

The star of the design is the dual touchscreen setup. The front screen means you can actually frame yourself for talking clips instead of guessing, and both screens are bright enough for midday sun. The built-in 47GB of internal storage saved us once when a microSD card filled unexpectedly mid-temple-visit — a small feature that feels enormous when it rescues a shot.

Video Quality in Real Holiday Conditions

Daylight

4K footage in daylight is excellent — natural colors that need less grading than GoPro's punchier output, sharp detail, and a 155° field of view that captures the chaos of a Hanoi intersection in all its glory. 4K120 slow motion turned a Ha Long Bay kayak splash into a poster-worthy shot. We shot mostly in the standard color profile and graded lightly; D-Log M is there if you want maximum flexibility.

Low Light

This is the Action 5 Pro's party piece. Hoi An's lantern festival at night is a torture test for small sensors, and the DJI's 1/1.3-inch sensor with SuperNight mode produced footage that looked almost cinematic — rich colors, controlled noise, glowing lanterns that did not blow out. No other action camera we have tested comes close; the GoPro Hero 13 visibly struggles in the same scenes.

Stabilization

RockSteady stabilization is excellent — walking tours look gimbal-smooth, and horizon-leveling keeps kayak footage flat even when the boat was not. It is neck-and-neck with GoPro's HyperSmooth; we genuinely could not pick a winner in blind tests. The subject tracking feature is the differentiator: it crops and follows you in frame, so solo walking-and-talking clips stay perfectly composed without touching the camera.

Audio

Built-in audio is strong for an action camera — the mic array handled Hanoi's street noise well, and wind reduction kept boat commentary clear. The killer feature is direct connection to DJI's wireless mics (like the Mic 2): pairing takes seconds, the audio quality jumps to proper-vlogger level, and you can wear the mic while the camera is mounted meters away on a kayak bow. For travel vloggers, this ecosystem is a genuine reason to choose DJI.

Battery Life on a Full Sightseeing Day

This is why you buy the Action 5 Pro. On our heaviest day — temple mornings, street food lunch filming, a sunset river cruise, night market walk, roughly two hours of total 4K recording — the battery still had around 30% left at 10pm. The GoPro Hero 13 needed a battery swap by mid-afternoon on the same itinerary. DJI claims up to 4 hours of lighter use; even discounting that, we never once carried a spare battery after day three. Combined with fast USB-C charging (a coffee-stop top-up adds hours), battery anxiety simply disappears.
